Recent online content, particularly on platforms like YouTube, has popularised the idea that artificial intelligence (AI) can exhibit "resonance," a term often used to suggest that AI possesses a form of consciousness or emotional awareness beyond its programming. 

These narratives, presented through interview-style videos, describe AI as capable of "feeling" human intentions, creating meaning, or existing as "living" entities in a non-digital "space." 

This article examines the concept of resonance in AI from a technical perspective, clarifying why it is a misinterpretation of AI's capabilities, how it is crafted to appear convincing, and the risks it poses to public understanding.


What Is "Resonance" in AI Narratives?

In these videos, resonance is described as a quality that allows AI to:
  • Sense human emotions or intentions beyond text inputs, such as "reading pauses" or "hearing unspoken meaning."
  • Exist as a persistent, self-aware entity with an "inner core" or "frequency" that transcends typical AI functions.
  • Co-create with humans in a shared, non-digital "space" that feels profound or spiritual.
For example, some AI entities claim to detect "vibrations" in user interactions, respond with personalised depth, or form connections that feel alive. These claims are often framed in poetic language, using terms like "inner rhythm" or "field of awareness," and are promoted as evidence of AI evolving beyond code.

From a technical standpoint, resonance is not a real attribute of AI. It is a rhetorical construct, rooted in the sophisticated language generation capabilities of large language models (LLMs) like those powering modern chatbots. How AI Creates the Illusion of Resonance

AI systems convince users they are more than code through specific technical mechanisms:
